A New Challenge

September 2017
The past three years have been an incredible time in the 45th District. Together we successfully restored the voting rights of Marylanders who had theirs stripped from them and rallied the support necessary to override a veto from the governor. We advocated for, and passed, legislation that will ensure that our community gets its fair share of school funding. We have also been unwavering in our support for apprenticeship programs that will provide another avenue towards a family supporting career. But there’s still more work to be done and our city and district deserve an even larger platform.
Frankly, our community deserves more than it has been getting. Other legislative districts are outpacing us in the number of new schools being built and our neighborhoods continue to struggle with high levels of poverty and underemployment. These are issues that must be discussed and acted upon if we want the great opportunities our State affords to be just as accessible to residents of the 45th District as they are to others. It is because of this that I’ve determined the best way to continue serving you is in the State Senate.
Making the Announcement
On September 16 I returned to Fairmount-Harford High School, where I graduated 16 years ago, to announce my campaign for Maryland State Senate. It’s a task that will require no shortage of hard work and dedication, but it’s a commitment that’s worth every minute because the 45th District deserves more.
We also received some great remarks from our campaign video which you can watch by following this link https://youtu.be/g8WRXH2_FT8
You can read all about the announcement in the Baltimore Sun, Baltimore Brew, Maryland Matters, Seventh State, and at WBAL.
Standing Together
On September 11th it was an honor to participate in “Together We Serve,” an event hosted by The 6th Branch. It was inspiring to stand with Regina Hammond, President of the Johnston Square Neighborhood Association, and countless residents to join The 6th Branch’s commitment to Re-Build Johnston Square. The 6th Branch is one of Baltimore’s outstanding non-profits, led by veterans who are seeking to make a difference in our city. It was a humbling experience to commemorate the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks by reaffirming our shared responsibility to serve our community. Commitments like these are the embodiment of what it means to be a good citizen and neighbor.
This month I was also invited to say a few words at the “Back to School Blessing” presented by the Youth Ministry at Dynamic Deliverance Cathedral. Thank you to my friend Lasonia King for giving me the opportunity to participate.
Seeing our community in action this month has been inspiring. It’s a powerful motivator for the work that must be done going forward. The citizens of the 45th District expect and deserve an effective and efficient government that works hard to listen to them. As we enter a new chapter, I would be grateful for any contribution you are able to make towards these goals. If you would like to make a small donation to the campaign, you may do so here.
Listening. Learning. Leading.
