First Quarter Review: Serving the 45th Legislative District
State of the State
Last week, Governor Hogan gave his first State of the State Address to the General Assembly. Despite some points of disagreement, I am optimistic about the work we can achieve within the Governor’s framework.
My First Bill – House Bill 370
It’s official – my first legislative measure has been submitted. My bill, House Bill 370, seeks to strengthen the middle-class workforce by investing in apprenticeship training. A hearing on my bill has been scheduled for Tuesday, February 17, 2015. Details on HB 370 can be found here. I look forward to updating you as HB 370 works its way through the legislative process.
Baltimore City Delegation Welcomes Two Distinguished Guests
The Baltimore City Delegation received two distinguished guests last week. Congressman John Sarbanes spoke to the delegation about the Red Line and the effects of sequestration on our City, and Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake spoke about how the Governor’s budget will affect our City and outlined her legislative agenda for this session. For more information on the Mayor’s presentation, click here: Budget Impact and Legislative Agenda.
Economic Development in the 45th District
Last Monday, I met with the Baltimore Development Corporation to discuss the many economic development projects planned for the 45th Legislative District. Some of the projects discussed include the redevelopment of Oldtown Mall and creation of a Food Hub to support Urban Farming initiatives.
Visit to Dunbar High School
Despite the ‘hustle and bustle’ this past week entailed, I had the opportunity to visit Paul Laurence Dunbar High School last week, where I met with the principal, Tammy Mays. While there, I met many students with very bright futures. I am so glad I took the time out to stop by.

Conversations with Cory
I believe a public servant has a duty to listen to the people. For this reason, I ran my campaign promising to be “A Leader Who Listens.” In that vein, I traveled throughout the district, connecting with residents and listening to their concerns. Standing on the steps and listening to the people of my community is part of the reason why I am able to serve as your Delegate.
As I now walk the steps of Annapolis, I hope to build on the foundation laid with the listening tour I started during my campaign and continue this dialogue with a new initiative called, “Conversations with Cory.” Each month, I will visit a local establishment within our district to hear what my community has to say, then take the valuable information I receive from these monthly conversations and use it to guide my decision-making.
The second “Conversations with Cory” will be held on Saturday, February 28, from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. at the Rita R. Church community center, located at 2101 St. Lo Drive, Baltimore, MD 21213.
After hearing from you, I would like to discuss the legislative agenda and progress on my bill, HB 370.
I hope that you will join us!
IN THE NEWS
After proposing HB 370 and receiving a lot of positive feedback about it, I have been branded as “the working-class guy.” Frankly, I am comfortable in that role. The Baltimore Afro-American Newspaper covers some of the details of the bill here. Also, We Party Patriots makes some remarks here.
In case you missed it, I recently conducted my first interview as a delegate with Comcast Newsmakers. Watch here.
